Many Western countries have a stake and vested interest in this region and I think they might be trying to elongate and exacerbate the conflicts in some ways too. One thing that I believe these countries are interested in is the geopolitic location and the amount of natural resources (e.g oil, gold, diamond) available in this region. I wonder whether this is true. I'm still a noob so would love to hear from you guys who probably know this better than I do What do you guys think are the role of the elite countries (especially the US) in this conflict?

The role of countries as US and GBR for example is very important. But I don't think the are trying to elongate or exacerbate the conflicts in the region. What did you mean by that?

Hi Gilad! Welcome to our forum!!!!! I mean some of the interventions that they made in the region are not necessarily effective in solving this issue and as the US tend to defend Israel in its actions, it might have as well exacerbate the hatred coming from the Arabs. Do correct me if I'm wrong because I'm new to this topic

You are very right. I am an Israeli and US defends our actions, and that does happen exacerbate the hatred coming from the Arabs as you said. It doesn't seem like you are new to the topic. Anyhow, US not only supports us, but is informed and a part of every decision to act before the action itself. That's why US and other countries role is so important- We cant capture Gaza because they won't let us. Our minister of foreign affairs Liberman said 3 days ago that we must conquer Gaza strip. We don't do that only because of the elite countries opinions. So if any, they are keeping things calm and under control here, and sure not elongate and exacerbate the conflicts.

Oh I see, so I believe in terms of US- Israel relationship, the US does intervene in this issue with goodwill. But do you think they do have some vested interest in the conflict as well? I have been reading some articles that talk about US wanting to keep oil and gas from flowing to the rest of the world markets and controlling the amount of weapons/terrorism against the US.

I think the first interest for the US here is peace, for many reasons- but you can see it in every statement of Obama. And you can see Kerry is working very hard to achieve it. Right now in Israel we have a let's say "republican" government - and achieving peace is much harder that way. In addition, Mahmud Abbas isn't willing to compromise as well, so the negotiation is stuck.
US must not get involved in another war here in the middle east- the public opinion there after Iraq and Afghanistan is against any kind of involvement (military wise) here in the middle east. Further more, war here might mean aמ embargo from the oil countries- and that's something neither US nor Europe elite countries are interested in. At least for now, when things are pretty calm worldwide. As long they are not obligated to respond to some terror event (as 9/11 or the bombing in Madrid) - they will aim for peace here... Or at least calm situation)

Oh because from what I have read I have a feeling that they are trying to control/manipulate the region both from a economic point of view and a political point of view. And now I understand that it is not completely true

Yea no doubt they are trying to (you read some very anti US articles but they are not wrong). But that's exactly why the powerful countries are aiming for peace in the region - it serves their interests. So I cant see how inflaming the situation here might serve any of their interests... You see what I mean?
